This site aims to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA. This page records what has actually been checked and what is still open, rather than claiming blanket conformance.
What has been done
- Contrast was measured, not eyeballed. Every rendered text element was swept programmatically and checked against its real composited background at its real size and weight, using the 4.5 to 1 and 3.0 to 1 thresholds as applicable.
- The text over the photograph was measured against the photograph. A contrast sweep cannot see image pixels, so the heading area was checked a second way: the real image and the real darkening layers were redrawn in code and sampled under the actual shape of each line of text. Because the heading sits over a moving clip, that was repeated on frames taken across the whole loop, and the figure kept is the worst frame rather than the calmest one.
- The motion can be stopped. The clip behind the heading loops, so there is a Pause motion button in the bar at the bottom of the opening screen. It appears only once the clip is genuinely playing, so it never offers to pause something that is not running.
- Reduced motion is honoured. Turning on "reduce motion" in your operating system means the clip is never requested at all. You get the still photograph, and every transition on the site is switched off.
- The still is the resting state. The photograph ships in the page and the clip is layered over it only after it starts playing. If autoplay is blocked or the file fails to load, the page looks finished rather than broken, and nothing you need is inside the clip.
- Phones never load the clip. On a narrow screen the opening becomes a framed still above the text, so there is no large download and no motion.
- Keyboard. Every link and control is reachable by keyboard in a logical order, focus is always visible, and a skip link is the first thing in the tab order.
- Structure. One h1 per page, headings in order, landmark elements, labelled navigation, and a language attribute on the document.
- Images. Every photograph has alt text describing what is actually in the frame. The clip is decorative, has no audio track, duplicates the still underneath it, and is hidden from assistive technology.
- Zoom and reflow. The layout reflows to a single column and stays usable at 320px wide and at 200 percent zoom without horizontal scrolling.
Known limitations
- Ordering happens off site. The menu and online ordering run through FoodBooking, a separate site with its own accessibility position, and gift cards run through Square. We cannot make guarantees about either. If ordering online is difficult for you, the restaurant takes orders and reservations by phone at 303 530 1516.
- The map is a Google frame. Its controls, contrast and keyboard behaviour are set by Google, not by us. The full address, hours and phone number are given as plain text beside it, so no information is available only through the map.
- Menu prices may move. The dishes listed on this site are a sample taken from the ordering page. The ordering page is the accurate list, and it is linked from every menu section here.
- No assistive technology audit yet. The checks above are automated sweeps and manual keyboard testing. This site has not yet been tested end to end with a screen reader by someone who uses one daily. That is a real gap and it is listed here rather than papered over.
If something does not work for you
Tell us and we will fix it. Call 303 530 1516, email aperitivoboulder@gmail.com, or come by 5530 Spine Road in Boulder. If a page is blocking you, describing the page and what happened is enough, and you do not need to identify the technology you use.
